Manchester United took their 17th League title (10th in the Premier League) when they finished the season two points ahead of Chelsea with their 2-0 win over Wigan at the JJB stadium. Chelsea lost their captain early in the game and then lost their lead of their game against Bolton right at the end, conceding a late equaliser.
The game more or less reflected on Chelsea’s season – losing key players in the season and not keeping their lead. Out of the 10 draws, they took the lead in 4 of them before conceding equalisers.
Man United, on the other hand, took their chances, and the sparingly dash of luck throughout the season, ended the season with most wins, most goals scored and least goals conceded. Not bad for a team that, for a weekend, was 19th on the table.
We were at Crab Shack again (where else right?) to catch the game and an hour before the game, it was almost filled with MU fans all decked out in their best jersey. Even the gf wore her jersey which according to her, Man U wins every time she wore it. At last count, it was 2 out of 3 (since she bought it not too long ago).
There was a fair bit of tension as Wigan gave Utd abit of challenge, contrary to what Avram Grant said about Steve Bruce’s team. A huge sigh of relief when the ball hit Ferdinand on his upper arm/shoulder in the penalty box without giving away one, followed by huge roar when Rooney was brought down at the other end. Soon it was joyous singing from all when Ronaldo put the ball in the net. Spirits were high, and beer was flowing fast.
I think Crab Shack must have their biggest windfall of the season. Wonder how they’ll do when the off-season starts.
By the time Giggs slotted the second goal, it was almost everyone struck Toto. Hugs, high-fives and songs rang throughout the place, and when the ref blew the whistle, the camera whores immediately jumped up and down, arms over each other as they sang their hearts out in front of a camera-man that appeared in the middle of the game. Many stayed to watch the trophy lifting by Giggs before trooping out of the place, way past midnight.
The red parts of the world would have had a wonderful night as they watch their heroes lifted the trophy. Most will be up again come 21 May as they face Chelsea for the European Champions League final – I know I will be.
