Today’s the day where I had to pluck that wisdom out. After hearing many horror stories from friends, i was expecting the worse. With my new pack of wet wipes with me, I went to the clinic this afternoon and after some paperwork, the dentist, a chubby and friendly-looking fella brought me and went through with me what I need to do. I’m glad that he looked like he could fit into any rugby team, some stories of less-than-strong dentists struggled to pull those bits and pieces of stubborn tooth and how the patients sat through the ordeal can make one squirm.
So yeah he told me that I need to pull the left lower wisdom out as it is causing decay and he advise that I do the same for the right lower – some other day I said as I quickly looked at him! Some might call this wussy, but think of how you spend your medical leaves…
So after all the talk, I was led to the dentist chair. First was the local anesthetic shot to numb the gums. It felt like a little prick followed by some slicing or sliding to get it in, and he gave me three shots! The last after a while as the nurse went to pick up another shot. More for a big fella like me?
After a while, the anesthetic kicks in and can feel abit of numbness and then the nurse starts to put on the scrubs, even covering my eyes, which I realised was a good thing as I don’t think I want to see what they do over my face. So there I was, my face and upper body covered up in the blue scrubs and then he started.

I didn’t feel the incision but I did felt and definitely heard the drill! It rings right through your teeth to your skull…zzrrrrrr zrrrrrr zrrrrrr. After which he starts to dig, pull or scrap. I have no idea what he was doing but there were plenty of drilling, pulling and vacuuming. I was damn glad he had strong arms, I could really felt him pulling out those stubborn bits! For the weak hearted, you can really feel the root being pull out, my head was literally being pulled up by him.
But it wasn’t painful. The only discomfort were the steel pressing against my lips and the awful but painless feeling of the root being pulled.
After twenty or so minutes, it was done. I think he gave me one more shot of anesthetic before stitching up the wound. After unwrapping me from the scrubs, I can see the nurse moving back and forth as she picked up the bits of the molar and transferred to the tray. I took a quick look before leaving, it wasn’t very good for the stomach.
I’m really glad that the dental technology has improved leaps and bounds. I was expecting lots of blood and drool while I walk to the car like it was decades ago, but all I had was minimal bleeding. One bad feeling I had when I went for tooth extraction or any dental work last time was the constant taste of blood, but I didn’t had much!
Now that’s its five hours since the surgery, I have stopped bleeding and all I have is a slight soreness on my left cheek. It’s not that bad afterall. But you won’t hear me say that I’m looking forward to the next one!
