Airport Extreme Update 3.4.2 – not just for Extreme

by jimmy on June 5, 2004

apple-airportMy Airport connection on my G4 Quicksilver failed to connect to my graphite Airport Base Station (ABS) sometime in early April after applying an update. This wasn’t the case for my Pismo which had no problems connecting to the ABS.
A while later MacFixit reported about Power Macs with more than 1Gb of RAM having connection problems with their Airport Extreme networks. As mine wasn’t on Extreme network, I didn’t think much about it, plus the fact my Pismo had battery problems, I couldn’t take out my Airport card in my Quicksilver to test on my Pismo.

However with the release of Airport Extreme Update 3.4.2, my connection is back up again. This was surprising as on that page it stated that the update was for Airport Extreme products only.
I have always update my system software even though there are times, like this case, where the description meant that it wasn’t necessary for me. Plus the fact that non-Extreme cards and Base Stations are considered dated technology, they should still make sure whatever software updates that are being released will not cause problems with older systems. They might not have to maintain feature parity, but at least don’t screw up older systems.
