AppleExpo Paris – new iMac G5

imac-g5 bq. Where did the computer go?
That’s the tagline of the new iMac that was launched at AppleExpo Paris by Phil Schiller, taking the place of Steve Job who is still recovering from his operation.
h6. Yummy design
So where did the computer go? A 1.6 or 1.8 GHz G5 processor, plus the harddisk, SuperDrive and a NVidia 5200 graphics processor, all squeezed within a 2″ thick screen enclosure. Yep, no extra CPU casing — just a screen — 17″ or 20″, swivels on an aluminium stand.

imac-g5-innerdsSlide the backcover and you can see, like the G5 Power Mac, everything is neatly arranged such that upgrading would be a breeze. Ultra-quiet blowers not only keep the G5 processor cool but also with as little noise as possible — making the G5 iMac quieter than a whisper.
The iMac is also designed to be wall-mountable with an optional VESA mount. Include that with an Airport Extreme card and an internal BlueTooth adaptor, you need not use a desk anymore.
On first look, the new iMac looks like an eMac with legs. But can’t comment till I see it physically. It might not be as cute as the Flat Panel iMac, but this new design will surely strike a chord with people who wants a sleek looking machine on their desk.
The low end starts from S$2,488 (17″ 1.6GHz) to S$3,588 for the 20″ 1.8GHz model. However, it is still surprising to find that Apple only put 256 Mb of RAM into the default configuration considering the low prices of RAM and 256 Mb is definitely not enough for it to run the more intensive programs like Final Cut Express or Motion. Another note is that BlueTooth option is not available in the SG Store, which I hope would be available in the future.
