Shifted again after six months staying at the eastern tip of the island, in a pseudo-chalet style house. No more mud tracks, long bus rides and stepping on poor snails crossing the path. This is just after I shifted out of my previous home back in October last year, a house I stayed for almost two decades.
This time, the move was more easy as most of the stuff are already boxed up, only bare essentials were out. Good thing its a long weekend with Vesak Day on Monday, plus two more off-days, settling in been a rather easy affair.
So any tips for moving?
- Boxes and tapes are your best friend.
- Bubble wraps are next in line
- Trolley is a must have
- Shop for affordable movers (look for yellow-ribbon projects-supporting company) – they provide economical moving without all the fuss
- Get insurance for your electronics – especially that new big-ass LCD tv
- Shift your own PCs…
- LABELS - brown boxes look alike, so label them wisely
- If you’re getting delivery – and doing it on public holidays – and if you’re shifting to a condo, make sure they allow delivery on public holidays, not all of them do
- wet wipes – handy to wipe those decade old well-caked dust
- personal health and safety – be well hydrated and do bend your knees when lifting heavy objects

Got myself a nice Ikea Galant table for my room (see pic) and I can put all my stuff on it. With its modular design, you can mix and match to get the best out of the space in your room. So now I have my new 32″ Panasonic LCD TV, my XBox 360, my router, MacBook Pro, the speakers and PowerMac QuickSilver all on (or under) the table and it looks good too!
Oh yeah, its not too difficult to fix up the Galant, just that the transportation was an issue as the main tabletop was a wee bit big for most cars. Had to use the bro’s Toyota MPV to do that, or you can use Ikea’s transport service which charges $45 for transporting your stuff.
So yeah – in another 6-9 months, I’ll be on the move again – to a more permanent place in Tampines. I can finally put my “gypsy” tag to rest.
