Euro 04 – Expected Results

Group D ( Match Day 4 )
Czech Republic struggled to overcome a stoic performance by Latvia to secure a 2-1 win while Netherlands came from behind to draw with Germany.
Latvia came into the competition in the supposedly Group of Death together with favorites Germany, Netherlands and Czech Republic. But they surprised everyone by drawing first blood in a quick counter attack late in the first half. The Czech were denied for most of the game by the Latvians before Baros scored for Czechs. The winner came after some poor defending and the Latvian’s failure to clear the ball resulted in a volley into the empty net by Heinz.

The German Netherlands game was hailed as the other mouth watering clash other than the England France match earlier. It was a game of two halves as Germany worked their way around a rather disorganised Dutch team. Guess much of their pre-tournament disunity haunts them as they weren’t much match for the workman like Germans. So it wasn’t surprising when the Germans got the first goal late in the first half. The second half was more competitive after Dutch coach, Dick Advocaat withdrew the ineffective Davids and Zenden, and replaced them with Sneijder and Overmars. And their reward came near the end with a spectacular volley by van Nistelrooy that went past Oliver Kahn. So one point each.
On a personal note, it was 2 wins out of 2 bets. I betted on total number of goals and both games were correct!
