I’m not a monster. I’m just ahead of the curve

And that line, says it all about the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight. The second in the Batman franchise by Christopher Nolan comes three years after the prevous Batman Begins.

Like all franchise, there is always the fear that the movie will not live up to the reputation and goes so horribly wrong – eg the 1995’s Batman Forever or 1997’s Batman & Robin. But since Nolan took up the helm, with Batman Begins, the Dark Knight is sort of the part II of one big epic.

In Batman Begins, we see how Bruce Wayne becomes Batman. In The Dark Knight, we get to see the struggles Bruce Wayne goes through fighting both nemesis in Gotham City, and also the demons in his own mind.

And of all baddies Batman faces, the biggest and baddest must be Joker. Whereas Jack Nicholson’s Joker is more suave and charm with a knack for destruction, Heath Ledger’s portrayal of Joker, is evil at its purest. There is that controlled rage under all that awful clown make up which he could just let loose with a look or that constant flicking of his tongue like a snake. His unfortunate demise after the filming definitely is a loss to the industry as Ledger was definitely becoming a great actor of our generation. Oscar for his Joker – hell’ya!

Likewise for Christopher and composers Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard who created the wonderful sound track that is one key component of the movie that builds the tension and accompanied the action. Christopher’s direction and pacing of the movie was spot on, making the almost 2 1/2 hour long movie almost seemed too short. The story itself has much twists but yet due to his editing, every loose ends are well tied up at the end of the movie.

Compared to other summer blockbuster superhero flicks like Iron Man and The Hulk, The Dark Knight is definitely ahead of the curve and it ain’t a monster! It has the perfect blend for it to become a classic – well written script, tight editing matched with a glorious soundtrack that brings out the tension and emotions and lastly, a strong cast for all its main characters!

Do watch it – and not just once, its worth every cent.
