Losing some wisdom

by jimmy on May 30, 2008

I used to hate going to see the dentist at the primary school opposite mine. To step into that hot humid clinic with bare bone setup, having the steel tools going into the mouth and spitting out blood and spit, was something which I dreaded.

I could literally count with one hand, the number of times that I stepped into a dental clinic.

So after a couple of days of bleeding gum, I decided to pop into the clinic near the office to have a check. And boy was I surprised with the advancement in dental technology. Sitting in that chair, with a rather friendly dentist, I went through the checks and also took the xray you see at the top in this futuristic machine which hums and talks to you through the process.

Here’s the report as it was typed by the dentist’s assistant. oh speaking of the assistant, cool that she’s there to sucked those excess saliva/drool with that straw vacuum.

Gums: Poor oral hygiene, plaque (+++), calculus (++)
Teeth: Minimally restored teeth, no decay noted
Both right and left wisdom teeth noted
38 (lower left wisdom tooth)

  • impacted
  • causing food trap
  • large and deep cavity noted on the neighboring tooth
  • advised extraction as soon as possible
  • surgical extraction
  • possible root canal treatment and crowning for neighboring tooth

48 (lower right wisdom tooth)

  • partially erupted
  • advised on extraction to avoid further episode of gum swelling

Thankfully the upper wisdoms are still under the gum. Only problem is the left which impacted and is growing horizontally, causing food trap and decay on the neighboring tooth.

So I’m gonna have this surgery the week after next to pull that offending wisdom out. Anyone who had gone through that, please assure me that it’ll be painless and I’ll be eating my favorite chah kway teow in no time.

Oh yeah, and I’ll be bringing packs of tissue to keep my drool out.

I am glad that I went for the check. It took me days of bleeding gum to finally wake my idea that dental health is important.

So all those 30 people who actually read this blog, when’s the last time you had the check?

The wisdom tooth extraction is FUCKING painful.

I did both at one go and couldn’t eat for a week.
