Power Mac speed bump

by jimmy on June 10, 2004

apple-g5powermacApple updated the G5 Power Mac line-up with 3 new dual G5 powered configuration, topping out at 2.5GHz. The new Power Macs are available at the Apple Store SG with the dual 2.5GHz retailing at SGD 5,788. This new update also marked the end of G4 Power Macs and also it seems the new Power Macs will only be available with dual processors.
However, this speed bump falls short of the 3GHz that was targetted to be in the Power Macs in 2004 by Jobs earlier last year when the G5 Power Macs were first launched. The same article also put to rest the emergence of G5 appearing in the Powerbooks or the iMacs anytime soon.

Some of the new features in the Power Mac besides the speed bump:
* individual 1.25GHz front-side busses for the 2.5GHz
* liquid cooling system for the top end model
For details on the specs, can read the press release.
For the fun of it, I went to Apple Store SG and tried to max out the configuration. The default configuration costs SGD 5,788 (w GST).
Here is the ultimate machine:
* Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5
* 8GB DDR400 SDRAM (PC3200) – 8×1GB
* 2×250GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
* 8x SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
* ATI Radeon 9800 XT
* PCI-X Gigabit Ethernet Card
* 56K V.92 Modem
* Bluetooth Module
* AirPort Extreme Card
* Bluetooth Module + Apple Wireless Keyboard + Mouse
* Apple Cinema HD Display (*23″ flat panel*)
And the grand total of = SGD 20, 481.81
Yeps. Twenty K. WOW
