I was introduced to this song, sung by Israel “Iz” Ka’ano’i Kamakawiwo’ole couple of days back (you know who you are — and yes, it will be played at your funeral) and has since been smitten by the cover of this simple song, played on a ukulele. It gave me this calmness and uplifting feeling as I walked back to office at lunch.
It had been a challenging two months for me – from the euphoric high of moving to my new house, to the despairing low of receiving the pink slip from my ex company, just days before my birthday. It was a bitter pill to swallow even though, it wasn’t unexpected. I went through the various stages of denial, despair, anger and thankfully, acceptance.
I knew that I had to move on from blaming others, and take that as an opportunity to do something else, something better. With that in mind, I took that unexpected period of leave, to be a house-husband to my wife, who was ever so supportive. Learnt to cook, do the laundry, clean the house – things which I had the fortune of not having to do before. I might not be a sous-chef, but together with her, we have been trying our hands at some fine dining (beer-up-chicken-ass anyone?).
And with some help and some self-marketing, I was able to get a new job, at a new environment. It’s just two weeks into the job, and I think I will do well there (I hope they think of me that way too).
So, after all the ups and down, as they say, after a storm, there will be, a rainbow.
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true.
Hope you like this song, like I do.
